One of only four cities in California to be awarded a 1999 Department of Education's renewable grant for after school programming, Pico Rivera's REACH (Recreation & Education Accelerating Children's Hopes), serves nearly 700 children in grades 1-8 each day. REACH provides after school homework assistance and learning and recreational activities.
The program is provided at no charge to participants. REACH is presented in partnership with the El Rancho Unified School District, the Sheriff's Department, the Southern California Gas Company, Rio Hondo Community College, Intercommunity Child Guidance Center, SASSFA and the Los Angeles County Public Library (Mines branch).

Child Supervision Program
Ages Kindergarten through 5th grade
The Recreation Department offers a national award winning before and after-school program at local parks. Working parents who need to be at work before their child goes to school can take advantage of this program, which begins at 7 a.m. (a morning snack is provided). Recreation
Leaders escort children from a nearby park to school and back to the park after school for a variety of planned activities, homework assistance and snacks until 6 p.m. The program operates Monday through Friday during the school year. Trips and Tours for All Ages
Adult and family trips are offered throughout the year for the convenience and enjoyment of residents at affordable prices through the "On the Go with 90660" excursions. Education, Recreation and Fitness Programs
The City offers classes open to residents and non-residents throughout the year. These include classes for preschoolers, children, teens, adults and seniors. Programs are designed to develop participants' social and physical skills through crafts, music, games, sports, arts and fitness classes, among others. Trained professional staff conduct dance, aerobics and gymnastics classes for different age groups as well as self-defense and karate. Staff also conduct sports clinics and tournaments for selected sports as well as instruction sessions to learn dance routines for drill teams and cheering squads.
Nutrition Programs/Classes
Pico Rivera operates a senior nutrition program for its residents at least 60 years old from Monday to Friday at its Senior Center (9200 Mines Avenue). During the summer, the City offers a free summer lunch program for school age children at local park sites.

The Pico Rivera Senior Center
The Pico Rivera Senior Center maintains an on going program of classes, social services and special events for persons 50 and older. Regular programs include health screenings, Thursday dances, a monthly Restaurant Club and a variety of exercise and leisure classes. The Center also operates a fitness center with state-of-the-art exercise equipment.
